Dear Parents and Carers,
VE Day Celebrations
VE Day is the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two – this was known as Victory in Europe Day.
World War Two lasted for 6 years and many soldiers and civilians lost their lives, so when the war ended people felt very happy and wanted to celebrate. Bradfields Academy was planning to have its own VE Day party on the 8th May. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown we are unable to celebrate in the same way and so would like to encourage all families to take part in your own celebrations at home. Resources can be found on the academy website here: https://www.bradfieldsacademy.co.uk/page/?title=Humanities+%28Geography%2C+History+%26amp%3B+Languages%29&pid=257 and via the government website: https://ve-vjday75.gov.uk/ You will find historical accounts, veteran’s stories, and resources to support you in celebrating at home.
You could also learn the Lindy Hop – an American swing dance that originated in New York in the 1920’s and 1930’s and became popular in wartime Britain thanks to the US Serviceman who were stationed here. English Heritage have put together some basic instructions to help you learn the dance: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/siteassets/home/visit/ve-day-75/eh-ve-day-at-home-pack.pdf or you can watch this YouTube video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5yubFAkySw.
Music was key to keeping morale up during the war and we could all use a little morale boost at this time. Why not join in with a nationwide sing-along led by Dame Vera Lynn.
The whole of Great Britain will be encouraged to join in with singing the wartime classic ‘We’ll Meet Again’ on Friday night. Dame Vera Lynn, now 103 will perform from the window of her Sussex home just after 9pm following the Queen’s special address to the nation as part of a televised event which will be on BBC One at 8pm. You could also put up bunting outside your homes, make a special VE tea (recipes can be found on the government website) and sing away together.
We would love to see any of your celebrations. Why not email your photos of your creations or clips of you dancing into us, with your permission we would love to share your efforts on our website gallery page and social media, including Facebook and LinkedIn.
Email photos or clips to firstname.lastname@example.org including your permission to allow us to share your photos/video clips on our website by the 12th May 2020. The best efforts will be sent a prize in the post!
