Remote Learning

During the latter episodes of lockdown, the academy was provided with the funds to develop remote learning. Students have access to Office 365 and Microsoft Teams. Certain students and communities also have access to SeeSaw.

Whilst it is hoped that large periods of lockdown and isolation are behind us these resources remain to support both students and staff.

Students that will be absent for a prolonged period, and are well enough to do so, should check their remote learning provision to see whether they have been set work, or can access live lessons. They should do this in line with their normal timetable.

Staff who are absent are able to deliver their lessons through TEAMS if they are well enough to do so.

Bradfields Academy’s Remote Education Provision: Information for Parents and Carers

This information is intended to provide detail about the remote learning that will be available to students if they are required to be at home due to national or local restrictions or if they are expected to self-isolate for periods of time.

As is stated in our Remote Education Policy it is recognised that our students have diverse and varied special educational needs and these can present themselves in a variety of ways. It is, therefore, not reasonable to expect that one size fits all and some students and families will be able to access more remote learning than others. Remote learning will be available to all and we will support families and students to access the work. Where a significant health and safety risk exists to students, families and property if engagement is forced there will be no expectation of engagement or full completion.

Remote education applies to all learning that is carried out away from the academy site. Bradfields Academy will make use of computer-based learning, practical activities and paper-based learning taking into account which of these methods best supports the subjects, the students and the situation.

Remote learning will be implemented under a number of different scenarios and therefore may look different under each eventuality.

  • Individual students may be unable to attend the academy – This may be due to isolating following a potential contact with a positive case (imposed by Bradfields or NHS Track and Trace) or they may have tested positive themselves but still be well enough to undertake work.
  • Groups of students may be unable to attend the academy – This may be due to contact with a positive case or due to staff shortages at the academy.
  • The entire academy could be closed due to national or local restrictions or severe weather.


The remote curriculum: what is taught to students at home

If a student has been attending the academy and then has to work remotely (for example having to isolate because a family member has started to show symptoms then it may take a couple of days for their usual timetable to be reflected in the remote education. If, however, other students are being taught remotely in that group then any student should be able to access it immediately.


What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of students being sent home?

From the first day of not being able to attend the academy students and families should check the Education Platform that their children use. This will be Office 365 (TEAMS Assignments), SeeSaw or in some cases a mixture of the two.

Work should be available on these virtually immediately. If, however, it is not then students should access learning platforms such as IXL for English and Maths, Times tables Rockstars for maths, Education City for other subjects and practise skills within these until work is available through the relevant Education Platform. In addition, they can access national education schemes such as BBC Learning as well as reading and logging their minutes.

Some subjects such as art will be setting paper-based work and this will need time to arrive in the post if the student has not been able to take it home.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in the academy?

As far as is possible students learning remotely will be taught the same curriculum as their peers. Wherever possible students will join live lessons through Microsoft Teams. Work to be completed will be shared through the Assignments tab and will be the same for those students physically in the lesson.

Where work would normally be differentiated for students they may find that the lesson is taught in Teams but the work is shared in the SeeSaw app.

Further still, some students may have all the communication and work through SeeSaw.

Where it is not possible for students to join a live lesson then work will still be set through the above methods. It may not be identical to the work that was set in the lesson as it will require a level of self/family teaching. It will, however, be linked to the curriculum being delivered in the academy.

For some students and some subjects, online work is not appropriate and this will take the form of paper-based assignments. These may not be the same as set in the classroom but will cover the required skills of the curriculum.

Finally, some subjects are, themselves, limited when remote learning occurs. For example, practical based work in DT or group work in drama and music cannot occur. In these situations, meaningful work that enhances and develops skills in these subjects will be set so that the students are more able to undertake these things when they return to the academy.


Remote teaching and study time each day
How long can I expect work set by the academy to take my child each day?

As a provision that caters for a wide range of abilities from Primary through to Year 14, this is going to be dependent on the individual student. Work that is provided is designed to be completed during the actual lesson. Students, as far as possible should follow their timetables and this way they can join any live sessions that are occurring.

Bradfields is aware that when working independently at home students may take longer on tasks than in the classroom. We ask that parents monitor this carefully. Students need to take regular breaks during the course of the day and not be constantly sat in front of a computer.

No student should be completing academy work after 4.30pm unless they are completing work for a GCSE or A-Level course. This time means that they will have completed the usual time in Bradfields plus an hour of home learning time. Many students will need to spend less time than this and we would encourage parents and carers to make the decision as to the length of time. Some engagement is better than none and it is not the academy’s intention to cause families issues by putting unrealistic pressures on students.

Accessing remote education
How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Online material will be provided through:

  • Microsoft Teams (Office 365)
  • SeeSaw
  • IXL – English and Maths
  • Timestables RockStars
  • Education City
  • Maths Shed (New)

Student login details for the top four are available in their planners or by contacting the academy office if they cannot be found. Maths Shed is a new provision and so further detail will follow.


If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

The academy recognises that some students may not have suitable online access at home. Bradfields adopts the following approaches to support those students to access remote education:

The academy has taken a survey of those families who do not have appropriate ICT facilities. We are continually updating the responses to this as more detail is reported.

Bradfields has taken advantage of local government, DfE and charity schemes to apply for digital devices for those students that need them to support with access. To date, the academy has loaned 72 laptops to students and 2 WiFi Internet keys to families who needed internet access.

For students who find accessing digital devices a challenge, paper-based work is available on request.


How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches tailored to the needs of the students to teach students remotely:

  • Live teaching (online lessons) – This is through Microsoft Teams on office 365
  • Recorded lesson – A video of the lesson posted on the group in Teams.
  • Recorded Instructional Video – Some lessons have recorded instructional videos that are available as part of the lessons on
  • Teams or as stand-alone videos in the Streams App.
  • SeeSaw – Resources and instructions shared with students and families through this app.
  • Printed paper packs produced by teachers.
  • IXL – Online practise for English and maths.
  • Times Tables Rockstars – Online maths skills.
  • Maths Shed – Online resources for maths.
  • Life Skills Challenges – Published in the Student Planners this is a scheme that students can continue with away from the academy.
  • Education City – Online activities in a range of subjects
  • BBC Learning Resources


Engagement and feedback
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

Student Engagement:

Ideally, we would like all students to engage with remote learning if they are absent from the academy and well enough to do so. Bradfields does recognise that this is an unrealistic expectation for some students and could pose a significant risk if parents were to force them to do this. The academy will promote remote learning to students and encourage them to access it. Lessons within the academy will be run using digital devices so that students become used to the process.

If students are out for an extended period of time and they start to disengage then the Life Skills Challenges can be used to provide practical elements to the daily timetable.

Parental Involvement:

The academy fully understands the demands currently placed on parents and carers facilitating home learning whilst attempting to work from home. Families can support remote education by establishing a routine suited to their child at home. This may include:

  • Supporting logging in at the correct time.
  • Supporting with the work.
  • Ensuring breaks are had
  • Ensuring a reasonable amount of engagement for your child
  • Providing Life Skills opportunities for students and where possible providing evidence of this.
  • Sharing and celebrating successes with the academy.
  • Providing feedback of the experiences so the academy can improve.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Whilst groups of students are at home the academy will continue to make welfare check phone calls at least fortnightly. This may be from the tutor or a member of the therapy team. Part of the conversation will be around online learning and the level of engagement. The member of staff making this phone call will feed detail back to the teachers.

Individual teachers will be able to monitor engagement in the following ways:

  • Attendance to live sessions.
  • Submission of the set learning assignments. This will include electronic assignments and the returning of any paper-based work.
  • Engagement with feedback.

Those students who are in exam group subjects will receive an increased level of feedback especially if they are not engaging. Individual staff will contact families either through email or telephone.


How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. We are in a highly advanced technological age and the academy has access to new packages such as Microsoft Forms. This allows for electronic marking of assignments as well as written feedback on questions

As far as is practical the academy will attempt to continue to feedback in line with the marking policy. Staff will provide feedback on work that is submitted through the Education Platform regularly and within a fortnight of the work being submitted.

Work completed within a live lesson will often receive feedback within that lesson or prior to the next lesson.

Any evidence submitted through SeeSaw will again receive feedback through that app. Teachers will provide feedback again within a fortnight but more often than not sooner than that.

Feedback will be more challenging if one or two children are working remotely and the remainder of the class is present, and this may require students to wait a little longer for feedback but this should still occur within a fortnight.

The academy will continue with the regime of Academic Review Days (by video conferencing until further notice) where more formal face to face feedback about progress will occur, and data on progress will still be reported in the usual time frame.


Additional support for students with particular needs

All students in Bradfields Academy have SEND and have an Education and Health Care Plan. The academy recognises that this will make engaging in remote learning a challenge for many families. The academy has tried to develop a flexible approach with a variety of resources to support students and will be happy to receive further feedback from families.

Whilst it is hoped that the variety of approaches will allow the maximum number of students to engage, it is accepted that some students will not be able to.


Remote education for self-isolating students

As you will be able to see from previous sections, remote education takes many forms. Currently, the following could be happening:

  • All students in a teaching group are in the academy and lessons can be taught as normal
  • All students are in the academy but some students are in a different bubble so they have to log in to the lesson remotely even though they are in the building. They are supported in doing this by teachers and Tas.
  • All students are working from home and access lessons and materials remotely.
  • Some students are in the academy and some are at home. All students access the lessons either by being in the lesson or by remote access from home.
  • Some students are in the academy and some are at home. Some students access the lessons either by being in the lesson or by remote access from home. Others login later and access the assignments.

All these have their challenges but the most complicated to deal with are the scenarios where some students are in class and a few are not. When these situations arise we will use the most appropriate resources to allow those students accessing remote learning to be able to do so and receive an appropriate curriculum as close to that being delivered to peers as is possible.

If my child is not in Bradfields because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

All of the above detail relates to groups of students or individuals. Students who are self-isolating will receive the same methods of remote learning as detailed above.

Paper-based resources may not be possible depending on the time frame of the isolation. For example, a 10-day isolation that we are informed of on Day 1 allows us time to get paper-based work out. If there is a delay (such as a weekend) before the academy is aware it may not be possible to get paper-based work out in time. Especially as there are disruptions to the post currently.
